Everyone sees the many martial arts dojos, traditional Chinese medicine clinics, vitality health training centers, etc use the Yin Yang symbol as their logo. Generally, it is to explain the formation of their school of theory, which is related to the Yin Yang theory. This symbol is the core content of ancient Chinese philosophical thought. It is also the best expression of the Yin Yang theory. It is a high-level summary of the law of the occurrence, development and change of everything in nature.

Now let us think of the shape of the Yin Yang symbol. The shape of the Yin Yang symbol is circular to symbolize that the changing of things is a state of endless movement. The circle is divided into a left and right half, each shaped like a fish. One fish is black, the other is white and they are entangled with each other. The white fish is on the left and the head belongs to Yang. The black fish is on the right and the head is Yin.

This design also expresses traditional Chinese culture. The ancients believed that the left side is the road where the Yang (sun) rises: the right side is the west, which is the road where the Yin (sun) descends. At the same time, the upper Yang of Heaven (Tian qi) needs to fall, and the lower Yin of Earth (Di qi) needs to rise. The white fish and the black fish are separated by a reverse “S” shaped curve, which represents a natural change that is gradual and continuous as opposed to a straight line which would symbolize a change that is abrupt and instant. For example, the breathing of a healthy person is a continuous, gradual and effortless transition of inhale to exhale.

As the white fish and black fish continuously transition, they remain mutually dependent. Neither side can exist without the other. The Yin and Yang sides of something are opposites, unified, coordinated and harmonious yet restrict each other as well. The Yin and Yang jointly maintain the dynamic balance of things in the universe.
